Details in the report—U.S. Coal Mine Salaries, Wages and Benefits— show that union miners at underground coal mines in the U.S. generally received up to 15% less in wages but more generous benefit packages than non-union underground coal miners. At surface coal mines, the opposite was true with non-union maintenance workers receiving up to 5% higher wages than their union counterparts.

While the number of companies giving employees raises is down compared to 2008,  hourly workers at 88 of the 122 U.S. metal and industrial mineral mining  companies responding to the survey still received an average increase of over  3%. Thirty-two mines in the study showed no change in wages and two mines  decreased wages 3% in the last year.

Salaries for professionals were mixed with general managers and mine managers losing ground. However, less senior counterparts gained when compared to CostMine's 2008 survey. Chemists, senior geologists and mine geologists enjoyed a healthy 6% average increase in wages in 2009 while mine engineers and metallurgists gained a more modest 4%.

Chief engineers and mine engineers also benefited taking home on average 5% more while mine managers lost ground taking home 4% less than last year.

Costmine's hourly wage and benefits survey includes 51 metal and 71 industrial mineral and aggregate mines in 26 states across the U.S.   The report also includes salaries for managerial, professional and administrative personnel from 97 mines.
